The Romanian Naval Authority will host the "The Black Sea Sub-regional workshop on International Co-operation on Oil Pollution Preparedness Response and Co-operation”, organized under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), in Bucharest, between July 10-12, 2024.

The course will gather around 25 participants, having as main objective strengthening the cooperation on search and rescue services at sea between the Black Sea riparian states, as well as cooperation in order to combat the oil pollution and other harmful substances in the marine environment of the Black Sea, bringing together representatives from the states bordering the Black Sea, consultants of the International Maritime Organization, observers and interested parties (stakeholders).

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations which is engaged in the development of the legal, technical and organizational framework for maritime navigation in international waters.  

The IMO's leading role is to create a fair and effective regulatory framework for the global maritime transport industry that promotes the safety and security of maritime transport in an environmentally friendly, efficient and sustainable way.

Parties to the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation (OPRC) are required to establish measures for dealing with pollution incidents, either nationally or in co-operation with other countries  and provide assistance to other states in the event of a pollution emergency.

“The Black Sea Sub-regional workshop on International Co-operation on Oil Pollution Preparedness Response and Co-operation”, is part of the Integrated Technical Cooperation Program (ITCP) and IMO's 2024 Technical Cooperation Fund, focusing on developing human and institutional resources in the maritime sector on a sustainable basis, but also aiming  regional and international collaborations, technical cooperation, coordination of other development aid programs in the maritime field to maximize the benefits of combined efforts and resources and is assumed by Romania through doc. TC 73/3/b.
